How to become certified

After reading the book and participating in Sleeping Dogs level I training, professionals can use the Sleeping Dogs method with children and adolescents. However, working with these children can be complex and difficult. Therefore many professionals and organizations choose to maintain and further develop their skills by participating in more training or supervision.
The training program to become a certified Sleeping Dogs trauma specialist is competency based and has four levels. Individuals can participate in open registration training or supervision, and we offer incompany training for organisations. When the level II, III, IV is not offered as open registration, these levels can be done in-company or in a series of individual supervision.

Sleeping Dogs Level I

Workshop: Treating Chronically Traumatized Children

This one-day or two-day workshop provides an introduction to the method and the interventions. After participating in the Sleeping Dogs level I training and reading the book, participants are able to use the Sleeping Dogs method. However, the more practice, the more this method is used effectively. After the training, participants can join a supervision group or participate in individual supervision. The basic modules in level I:

• Identification of trauma
• Introduction to trauma treatment
• Resistance and motivation in engaging in treatment
• Using the Sleeping Dogs Method
• Providing psychoeducation
• Analysis of barriers to trauma treatment
• Treatment planning and interventions

Sleeping Dogs Level II

Workshop: Practising the method

This two-day workshop focuses on practising the method with difficult and stuck cases and using the interventions. The content of the workshop depends on the participants’ experiences and needs and can be customised. Topics such as how to motivate children, to discuss acknowledgement and responsibility with perpetrator-parents and how to work with traumatized parents with limited abilities can be covered. The basic modules level II:

• Treatment plans
• Talking to children about trauma
• Motivating children
• Stabilisation and preparation of children for trauma treatment
• Support for traumatized parents
• Systemic conversation with perpetrator-parents about the responsibily for the trauma

Sleeping Dogs Level III and IV

Workshop: Further practising the method

These levels consists of a two-day workshop or a series of competency-based sessions, and the completion of a number of Sleeping Dogs treatments of chronically traumatized children ranging in ages with a variety of problems. Clinicians work on their own goals in the context of their own practice to become certified as Sleeping Dogs Trauma Specialist. This can be done individually or in a team or group. The basic modules of level III and level IV:

• Treatment plans in challenging cases
• Trauma Healing Stories
• Sexual abuse

• Dissociation
